    Uncompleted Run...

My right feet had been aching since yesdae.. thinking oni a small issue, I turned up for the weekly run at the club... Today will be a hilly run- to Labrador Hill then Mt Faber.... I started off as per normal.. but halfway through Depot road, I start to feel a sharp pain on my heel.. and I started to limped quite badly as I ran... I limped all the way from depot road to Alexandra road.. my right knee was feeling the strain and I knew I can't make it to Labrador Hill.. i will end up hurting my right knee... Hence at the junction of Telok Blangah Way, I signalled to Jimmy Tan and Wong who were waiting for me across the junction that I will head back straight to club... I slowly walk a jog back to the club.. was quite disappointed to miss the hill run... but still thinking how I could have hurt my feet.. :( After the whole run, Anthony told me maybe it is Plantar Fasciitis.. maybe due to the speedwork I had done in tuesday...

    Causes of plantar fasciitis
Biomechanical flaws including flat feet, high-arched feet and a tight Achilles tendon can result in considerable stress on the plantar fascia. Weight gain can exacerbate the problem, especially for women who fail to lose extra pounds gained during pregnancy.Other causes: excessive pronation, sudden increases in training mileage, beginning speedwork or switching surfaces (particularly to concrete sidewalks). Also at risk: women who wear high heels all day and then switch into flat running shoes. The good news: in most cases, plantar fascitis can be treated successfully without surgery. The bad news: ultimate success depends on a commodity often in short supply among runners: patience."It may take six weeks to three months to heal, or even longer, and thats hard for runners," says Dr. Thomas Clanton, a foot/ankle orthopedic surgeon who serves as team physician for Rice University in Houston, Texas. "I'm a runner myself, so I understand that completely."

    Treatment
Medical experts treat plantar fasciitis with many of the usual approaches: stretching; icing after running; oral anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen; shoe inserts or custom-made orthotics; night splints and even injections of steroidal anti-inflammatories, such as cortisone.Surgery, which involves severing the attachment of the plantar fascia to the heel or removing the heel spur, should be considered only when all else fails. Even then, many foot specialists are reluctant to perform it, concerned that it will cause more problems than it will fix.The mainstay of any treatment program for plantar fasciitis is stretching: specifically, Achilles tendon stretches performed first thing in the morning. You can do one effective stretch while you're still lying in bed. Loop a towel around the bottom of the foot and pull your toes toward your nose for 30 seconds, and do three sets, Dr. Laps explains. Then, during the day, do wall pushups with straight legs for one set, then with bent legs. Its best to do the pushups barefoot if possible.Experts also recommend wearing a heel cup or heel cushion in both running and regular shoes. They urge men to wear an oxford tie shoe during the day. Unlike loafers, tie shoes prevent the toes from curling, a habit that can worsen plantar fasciitis. They suggest women either permanently switch from heels to flats or at least try to run in the morning, before putting on heels. Some doctors recommend using a night splint, removed in the morning, to keep the plantar fascia from shortening overnight. "At night everybody sleeps with their feet pointing down, and in that position the Achilles and plantar fascia tighten up," Dr. Clanton explains. "Thats why it kills you when you first get out of bed. The band suddenly stretches, which perpetuates the problem. By putting a splint on and holding the foot more perpendicular to the leg, you can prevent that."If these approaches fail, physicians must investigate other possible causes of heel pain, such as a stress fracture, or arthritis caused by Lyme Disease. "As long as the cause of the heel pain is mechanical, its very easily treatable," Dr. Laps says.

    Prevention
In any case, plantar fasciitis is troublesome enough to be worth avoiding, and there are many simple, effective ways to prevent it. Here are the best:
Wear well-cushioned shoes, and make sure the heels do not become significantly worn.
Run on soft surfaces. The best: grass, trails, a good track. Worse: asphalt. And worst: concrete.
Keep your mileage at a relatively consistent level. If you do pick up your training, increase total weekly miles by no more than 10 percent per week.
When beginning speedwork, ease into it gradually with a several-week buildup.
    Perform Achilles tendon stretches regularly.
Women: don't wear high heels during the day, then switch to running shoes in the evening. Its probably better to run in the morning and then put on your heels. Or dont wear heels at all.

    2nd Speedwork @ Queenstown

The turnout was okie today.. about 15 of us.... some regulars were MIA... hahaha maybe becos of the speedwork that our trainer had posted on web... We got a new runner, Alan today. He hoped to be able to do a sub-5 for this year marathon and decided to join us in our training session... as there is abt 3 mths plus to go b4 the marathon... Caroline was also back to join us for the 2nd time =)

At about 6.50pm, we headed to Queenstown stadium from Depot road- Alexandra- Mei Chin Road... I took about 25 mins to reach the stadium.. I quickly walked to the grandstand to remove the sand inside my left shoe before joining the group on the track...

Ong briefly explained the speedwork of today.. will be similar as the last speed work.. 6 sets of 800m... but the group will be split into 2... the 1st group will start 30secs earlier followed by the 2nd group who are faster.... this is to let the 1st group have a similar amt of time rest with the faster group.... then will do a slow 400m recovery run after each set...

Throughout the 1st 5 sets, I managed to feel and lock my pace at 4min/set quite consistently.. I hope to be able to move on to a faster pace in the near future... For the last set, Akira told me tt he will run with me... so he companied each runner in the 1st group.. haha fair and square.. when I ran beside Caroline, he advised me on how I should run on the track.. always run on the inner track path.. so I geared up my speed a little bit, overtook Caroline and quickly moved in to the inner track... breathing hard and tried to relax my breathing.... at the last 200m, he showed me how the power of my arms can helped me moved much faster ahead.. I pushed my arms down and combine both power to run.. and it really made me ran faster... I finished the last set in 3:52secs... this showed tt I had not used much of my arm power to run during the 1st 5 sets...

    4km warm up run:
    1st set : 4:04:88
    2nd set : 4:05:17
    3rd set : 4: 01:52
    4th set : 4:05:19
    5th set : 4:00:14
    6th set : 3:52:55
    4km recovery run: 28mins 25secs

I took a quick drink from the toilet and ran back with Ong.. I was quite tired by now.. can't wait to reach the club asap.. to have a nice cool bottle of 100plus... got the feeling of an Oasis just ahead and kept me going to reach for it.. hahaha

    Public Service Quarter Marathon

When we arrived at the stadium of Temasek Poly, there was a buzzing crowd of runners all over the grandstand... We met up with cm, laichee, sok hua and Mr Chua.. Sok Hwa had a big fall this morning from her cycling training @ LCK... her elbow was bruised but that din obstruct her from being the 7th runner in the race... :D Soon Eng Hwa, Anthony, Lee, Andre, Wong and Kumaran also came.. :)

We put on our number tags and did a short warm up at the stadium... it was drizzling... At around 4pm, the commentator asked all runners to assemble at the track.. the 1st race was 5.8km... ladies will start off 1st followed by men's senior, mens' veteran and junior with a 2 mins block interval... the 2nd also the last event will be the 10km race for men's open (public svc and invitational)

Laichee, Ailing, Eng Hwa, Sok Hwa and I had a short and funny chat about the number tag at the last row of the female runners.. Eng Hwa guided us to run on the grass patch as there were too many runners on the pavement.. and we managed to over take alot of ladies runner from there... soon we crossed the bridge and ran into Bedok reservior.. Eng Hwa and Sok Hwa were already up ahead.. I just ran on my own speed as they were simply too fast for me.. hahaha.. soon after, alot of male runners ran past me.... and all the way along the reservoir, I could hear my heavy panting.. soon cm overtook me followed by Mr Chua.... soon I saw Adam's place just ahead.. suddenly, I had a weird feeling around my adominal.... something like a whole block of numbness... I carried this numbness all the way till I finished the race... maybe due to the medication that I had been taking since last week.... I am really glad to finish the run.. thinking back.. it was a so near yet so far run for me.. luckily the weather was cloudy and cool due to the drizzle...

Soon the 10km runners were back.. Ong followed by Anthony, Kumaran, Lee and Andre... we had our cool down at the track and waited for the results.... Lai Chee got the 5th, Eng Hwa 6th in the Women's Open and Sok Hwa 7th in the Woman's Veteran... before gg for our sumptuous BBQ dinner @ Adam's place :D

    Esplanade

The planned route for today is to the Esplanade.. We started off at around 650pm.. We ran in a big group today.... all the way together till Grand Corpthorne.... soon I was the last runner with cm and Yuen just ahead of me.... besides adjusting my breathing, the only thing in my mind then was to keep up with them.. we turned left to river valley road to avoid the crowd along clark quay... I reached esplanade in 40 mins.. I took a quick drink and joined the rest who had already taken their break.... and headed back the same route to the club... :)

    Sunday Run

I went to club alone today.. My hubby Ong was sick.. Quite a few Sunday regulars turned up.. We had a new runner, Chris, with us from Sg runners... Cm proposed to this run weeks ago... The full route will be from Club-Portsdown-Ulu Pandan Canal- Nus-West Coast Park - Pasir Panjiang-Club.. Ong had estimated the route to be about 30km...

We started off at 7.05am.. I ran at my own pace.. at portsdown, we saw Chris and Hock soon leading the front patch.. and Anthony was joking that Chris din knew that HS is the rabbit for today's run... hahaha.. as there was still a long way to go.. Soon I reached the end of Portsdown.. cm waited for me and also looked out for Andre.. he was no where in sight... cm think he must have U turn back to club.... so we ran on to our 1st water pt at Buona Vista MRT... I was the last to arrive and my time clocked 45 mins.... I hydrated myself with mouthfuls of tap water and joined cm and yuen outside the toilet.. the rest had already continued towards the Canal...

As I ran in to the entrance of the Canal, I saw a familiar face.. It's Benson!! wow I last seen him at the SG Marathon.. almost 8 mths ago.. he asked about Ong.. and when I told him Ong was sick.. he alamak.. hahaha.. a very friendly and funny friend.. :D I ran on to join cm and yuen.. after a short while, I felt very thristy... and my pace was abit slower... but managed to maintain about 50m from cm and yuen.. wow it had been ages since I ran along this Canal.. it seem so long and never ending.. was really glad when i saw cars along the main road.. meaning I had reached the other side of Canal.. hehehe... cm passed me his bottle.. and I got a big gulp.. hahaha..

We crossed the AYE bridge and reached NUS.. the sun was out and shining bright.. lucky I got my cap with me to shade my eyes.. I lowered down my head and slow jogged as I felt a sharp pain near my adominal.... maybe due to the medication that I had taken these few days... I felt quite tired by now.. and cm got me a can of 100 plus from the prata shop.. I told cm I wanted to head back to the club.. I told cm to move ahead as I ran at a slower pace with fingers crunching my fists.. I was trying to adapt to the pain as cm told me too.. as I might encountered the same problem during the marathon...

At Science Park II, Cm got me a bottle of 100plus from the petrol station.. I finished almost 3/4 of it before I passed back to him.. and he said that I was really very thirsty.. halfway through, I couldn't take it anymore.. and we took a bus back to the club from pasir panjiang road...

    Speedwork @ Queenstown Stadium

Today the turnout was really low... only 11 of us.. hahaha maybe because our trainer, Ong, posted the planned route on the forum... Speedwork!! :p We started at around 7 pm and headed towards Queenstown stadium from Depot Rd- Alexandra Rd- Mei Chin Rd... it about 4 km.. I took about 25 mins.. haha reserved some energy for the speedwork...

Ong briefed us on how the training will be.. we are supposed to do 6 x 800m sets.. 4 min per set... abt 5min/km pace.. if we can do this consistently throughout.. it will be a sub-4 for marathon.. and the number of sets will gradually increased for the next subsequent speedwork sessions.. sort of similar to the Yaso-800s workout.. This is good for me as I get to to learn how to feel my pace... :)

My standard had not reached 5min/km for long distance run.. so 4 min per set for 6 sets is definitely a speedwork and challenge to me.. as I tends to be slower for the later sets... akira taught us how to swing our arms where on the track.. I tried that out.. and it works quite well for me.. :) after the 4th set, I started to feel the dryness in my throat.. finally finishing the last set, I was quite shagged out already... but glad to maintain a consistent timing for the 6 sets :D

    6 Sets Timings:
    1st Set -- 4:06:90
    2nd Set -- 4:03:86
    3rd Set -- 4:03:75
    4th Set -- 4:08:40
    5th Set -- 4:13:03
    6th Set -- 4:07:59

    National Day Run @ Tampines

Today is Sg 40th Birthday!! We had a celebration run @ Tampines Central.. My hubby and I reached Tampines Safra @ 1.45pm.. Most members from MF and TP side have arrived and gathered for the T Shirts at the main lobby.. Due to the limited sizes, I got a "XS" and Ong a "S".. hahaha luckily managed to squeeze in the small shirts...

We headed towards the starting point of the Run.. There was a big crowd and booths setup with games and even IPPT test system... The weather was very hot and really terrible to run at this hour.. we filled oursleves with loads of water... The Mayor flagged off at 3pm.. after 400m, the run ended for the Mayor group and the relay team headed towards the Padang.. as we were not allowed to followed suit, we turned to Bedok Reservoir and ran one loop around it.. we took a short water break at the toilet and ran up a slope and then into the reservior sand path.. this is my 1st time running inside the reservior.. there was no shade all the way and i was not used to the stone/sand part.. so i comfortably ran on the grass patch... hehehe... We stopped over for another water break at the other toilet and headed back to the club..

    My 1st Sand Run!!

When I reached the club @7.15am.. most members have gathered at the lobby.. we had planned to run in to Sentosa for the NB Trial... At the entrance, we flashed our Islander pass and slow jogged in from the side road.. Anthony, Colleen, Hock Soon, Andre, Ong and I decided to do the NB 10km trial whereas Chairman led the remaining who prefer to do a longer to a scenic route...

There was a big crowd of runners at the assembly area.. at ard 8am, the officials briefed us about the run.. and off we ran out of the visitor center.. Ong told me not to run to fast as the sand part will be tough.. we locked our pace following 2 Ang Mohs.. past the sentosa cove, we saw chairman leading the "old balance" group in the opposite direction.. haha just a name to avoid confusion between the new balance runners running in the same direction as them..

Soon we reached Tanjiong beach.. after a few steps, i almost couldn't take it.. my breathing was heavily.. my legs were hurting as I had a tendency to sprain my leg due to the soft sand.. and my legs keep running down the slope towards the sea!! half way through the beach.. i felt like giving up.. Ong gave me alot of encouragement and taught me how to overcome.. he said my legs were not strong enuff.. and i was unable to control well.. i slow jogged to the end and was glad to reach the pavement.. after a short distance, we reached the Siloso beach.. i ran on the firm sand portion. and this was better than the 1st sand part... by the time i ended the sand portion, i felt very tired and drained out.. my throat was super dry.. and i told Ong.. i need 100 plus.. I gulped down a can of 100 plus and felt recharged and ran back my pace all the way back to the Endpt.. my time clocked 1hr 03 mins.... I filled myself with cups of 100 plus...

We met up with cm and the rest of the group at the departure center.. and I slow jogged back with a tummy full of 100plus.. hahaha...

    Fitness Test @ Gombak

When my hubby and I reached Gombak stadium at around 6:35pm, we saw Anthony and Jimmy doing their warm up laps. Melvin joined us shortly after... We had registered for the Conconi test organised by SAAA and Polar.. we were required to run 2.4km around the stadium and measure our anaerobic/lactate threshold.. we were quite surprised to see alot of people running on the track.. this is the training ground for SAAA athletics... quite a number of national runners were training too...

Soon we met up with William, SAAA official and Adrian, GM of Polar.. There were 9 people taking the test.. 5 of us from MF Safra and 4 others from public... Adrian gave us a short briefing about the Conconi Test.. this test is normally done on a threadmill.. so he can easily adjust the speed for the testee to run so as to determine the lactate threshold more accurately... because we are very fast in the 1st few laps of the 2.4km and slow down at the last few laps.. so it will be just a normal 2.4km test today.. Each of us were given a Polar S610i.. this was the 1st time I ever wore a heart monitor strap.. was quite amazed how the heart rate is being detected... hehehe...

We were taught on the basic functions and moved on to the start pt... Ong sped off with the group following close behind.. I am the only gal taking the test... so maybe will be the last one.. hahaha.. Past the 1st lap, an official remained me to press the lap button... soon I managed to overtake a young boy.. should be in his teens... haha good chance to be the 2nd last instead.. hehehe.. Past the 3 lap, I felt the heart strap abit loose.. was worried for a moment that it would drop off.. so I just expanded my lungs to keep it in place... Ong overtook me shortly after my 5 lap... his final lap... I did it in 11:44.. wow been quite sometime since I ran below 12 min.. hehe.. quite satisfied with my timing... =D

I joined the rest at the grandstand.. Ong did it in 9:25... Anton in 9:57.. well done for him.. I told him before the run that he could easily do below 10min.. followed by Melvin and Jimmy.. Adrian explained to us how to read the results from the watch... my Max was 165.. and min 65... Adrian told me maybe because the strap was loose during my run.. that's why there was some error in my heart rate readings...

    Lap Readings
    1st Lap -- 1:49:6
    2nd Lap -- 1:55:1
    3rd Lap -- 1:57:4
    4th Lap -- 2:00:1
    5th Lap -- 2:03:6
    6th Lap -- 1:58:9

    New Route to Farrer Road

Today turnout for ladies was quite low.. oni 4 ladies Colleen, me, Yen and sh.. we gathered together and listen to our trainer, Ong about the directions of the new route... It will be a 14km run.. MF Safra - Henderson Rd - Tiong Bahru Park - Delta Canal -TanglinRd - Holland Rd - Farrer Rd - Margaret Rd - Delta Canal - Tiong BahruPark - Henderson Rd - MF Safra ... lucky i ate a banana at 4pm.. so got abit of energy for the run =)

We started off promptly at 6.50pm.. At the canal, I saw the front runners were running at a slower pace today.. all running in the same pack... haha Anthony joked that all conserved energy.. dun dare to run past the trainer... past the Canal, the front pack started to lead further away from us.. still a long way to go... Cm, Yen and I ran together... At the end of Tanglin road, I felt a tear at the side of my sore... must be the dried blisters due to my yet to season GT1100... it was quite painful.. and I took sometime to adjusted to it... Yen was running very fast today.. I tried to maintain 2 arms length behind her.. along holland road.. i started to feel abrasion caused by running gear... really bite through my lips and endured all the way.. At the end of Magaret drive, cm said 4km more to go.. my timer clocked 1hr1min...

Half way through the canal, we turned in henderson road.. that's a small short cut from the planned route.. At the last stretch along Henderson road, I sped all the way back to club...

    Short 4km Run

My hubby, Ong was caught in the traffic jam at AYE and was home later than usual. By the time we changed into our gear, it was around 7.30pm... We planned to do a short route today.. 4km run to habourfront and back to Telok Blangah. My hubby's old injury came back again.. he told me to run "cho cho li"--- meaning slowly in Korean.. hahaha he had been crazy about the korean "Marathon" movie based on a true story of an autistic child completing a full marathon in 2hr 57min.. very nice and touching movie...

I started off abit slowly .. just let my legs did the running since it was a down slope.. once we reached Telok Blangah road, i had already warmed up and started to increase my steps.. we had to stop at the red light of Morse road.. and this was when Ong told me.. "cho cho li, cho cho li" hahaha.. but my legs dun listen to me... i just continued on with the faster pace and breathing... when we past the 2.4km mark.. Ong said "cho cho li" again.. my legs just ignored him.. and ran even faster in pace to the end... My time clocked 20min 57secs.. almost 1 min slower than my PB...

At warm down session, Ong still complained that I didn't listen to his "cho cho li".. hahaha.. I told him.. his "cho cho li" is considered fast for me as he usually do 20min for his slow 4km run.... so correct lor.. hehehe

    Distance covered: 4km __ Timing: 20mins 57secs
